Massospondylus carinatus

A "Prosauropod" known from the Hettangian and Pliensbachian epochs of the Early Jurassic.  It grew to an adult length of 5-6 meters (16-20 feet), known to grow relatively steady throughout it's life.  Like many "prosauropods" Massospondylus primarily herbivorous, though it has been suggested to feed on small vertebrates and carrion from time to time, to supplement it's diet.  Long believed to be quadrupedal, it's now accepted that the short, but strong forelimbs of Massospondylus restricted it to a bipedal stance.  The forelimbs, which bare strong, curved thumb claws, were most likely used for a variety of purposes;  such as feeding, digging, intraspecific combat, and fending off predators.  Fossils of Massospondylus have been uncovered in South Africa.
