Description

A large coelophysoid from Late Triassic Germany, Liliensternus was about 5.15 meters (17 feet) in length, and weighed about 127 kilograms (280 pounds). It was one of the largest predatory dinosaurs of the Triassic, and it probably preyed on the local "prosauropods" such as Plateosaurus. The twin crests on its head are somewhat speculative, but most paleoartists depict it this way mainly because it was possibly closely related to Dilophosaurus (I usually place the Dilophosauridae within the Coelophysoidea due to their many similarities). This animal is depicted honorably on the Bedheim coat of arms. Another close relative was probably Lophostropheus airelensis, which was once considered a species of Liliensternus.
